Rossi went fastest just a few laps after going out on the track, but with only 30 minutes remaining in the session Checa bettered his time with a 1'43.142, breaking the circuit record. Just fifteen minutes later Rossi regained the lead, however, by breaking the 1'43 barrier.

Kawasaki rider Shinya Nakano's performance is also worth a mention, as he finished the day third fastest.
