Loris Capirossi will be starting the Jerez MotoGP tomorrow at the front of an all Bridgestone front row. The little Italian completed a stunning lap in the closing moments of the session which improved further on an earlier lap that already placed him in first.
Capirossi & Gibernau celebrate The one hour long qualifying session got off to a dramatic start when Alex Hofmann's Ducati suffered an oil leak going into turn nine, a matter of minutes after qualifying started. He managed to keep the bike upright but many of the riders behind him on the track weren't so lucky. Valentino Rossi was the first rider to hit the patch of oil and immediately his Yamaha M1 slipped out from underneath him and into the gravel, suffering heavy damage. It was soon chaos as every rider who went to turn in crashed as soon as they reached the oil spill. Both Kawasakis, both Fortuna Hondas and Kenny Roberts Junior all had to switch to their number two bikes for the rest of the session, which was red flagged to stop any more riders going into the gravel.Once the oil had been cleaned up as much as possible the pit lane re-opened for the remaining 55 minutes of qualifying. Once the qualifying tyres came out it was clear Capirossi was very quick on his GP6 and he went fastest with around 20 minutes of the session left. Shortly after, the Kawasaki ZX-RR of Shinya Nakano shot up the timing screens as he made his attempt at a quick lap with a super-sticky tyre. The green machine was briefly second but finished the hour in third place - no doubt a pleasing result for team manager Harald Eckl who is today celebrating his birthday. As the clock ticked down the Repsol Honda riders put in their fast laps, with Hayden qualifying fourth and Pedrosa just a tenth of a second slower in fifth, in his first ever MotoGP qualifying session. Toni Elias also put in an impressive showing and qualified in sixth - he even managed to go faster than teammate and runner-up in last years championship, Marco Melandri. Rossi with Jeremy Burgess With a matter of minutes left for the riders to make their mark, Valentino Rossi was way down the order in ninth position. The world champion seemed to be having problems with rear grip on his number two bike, but it was only until he started his final lap just as the hour finished that it was clear how much of a problem. After the first couple of sectors the Italian was down by around half a second and it looked unlikely he'd be on the front row for race one of the season. As he crossed the line it was clear he hadn't made a dent in the half a second deficit or even improved on his current position. The reigning MotoGP world champion will start tomorrow's race at the back of row three behind two rookies.Outside of the top 10 however, a more usual pattern appears. Ninth he may be, but Rossi was still the quickest Yamaha qualifier ahead of his teammate Colin Edwards and the Tech 3 bikes. The final grid looks an exciting one and we could have a great start to the season tomorrow. Both Ducatis are very quick and Gibernau will be especially determined. A quarter of the grid have never even taken part in a MotoGP race before. And Rossi's in ninth, so don't miss it.
