Chris Vermeulen took his, and Rizla Suzuki's, debut MotoGP pole position today in Turkey. The Australian dominated a rain-soaked qualifying session on his GSV-R, in what was a complete turn around for the team after a disastrous Qatar Grand Prix. Nicky Hayden looked to be the man to take the number one spot away from Vermeulen in the dying moments of the session, but he outbraked himself at the tricky left hander on his final chance at a hotlap. A frustrated Hayden rejoined the circuit, but his laptime was long gone. Nonetheless it was an impressive performance and further evidence of the 'new' and more determined Nicky Hayden that we have seen so far this year. The front row was completed by Sete Gibernau, last year's pole man. In Suzuki Manager Paul Denning's words, "If it's wet tomorrow we'll be going for the podium, if it's dry then we can expect both guys to ride to the full potential of the machine and I have no doubt they will do that." Valentino Rossi continued his run of poor qualifying results in 11th position.
